Carson,Calif. – on Saturday, June 12, 2010 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Dominguez Rancho Adobe Museum is hosting the 100th Anniversary of the First International Los Angeles Air Meet held in America. This was the first time that Americans were exposed to the world of aviation on a mass scale: Hot air balloons, blimps, aerial acrobatics and aerial speed races.
The Dominguez Rancho Adobe Museum will celebrate this momentous day with static Model T’s, the 1912 Silver Ghost Rolls Royce, airplane displays ranging from experimental to modern, an 1883 Glider, a 18 foot Blimp from the Lighter Than Air Society and a replica of the 1909 Bleriot which was one of the types of planes flown in the original Air Meet. Other activities will include tethered balloon rides, tours of the adobe and a ferris wheel. There will also be a presentation by the Tuskegee Airmen and a short talk about the 1910 air meet. Children’s activities will be on the lower grounds and will include a meet and greet opportunity with Sid the Science Kid.
Complimenting ground activities, “In the Air” activities will feature fly-overs by the military, parachuters and the classic Goodyear blimp. The Van Nuys Condor Squadron will re-create one of the races from 1910 International Air Meet. Tuskegee Airmen and the young pilots from the Tomorrow Aeronautical Museum will perform a flyover above the Rancho grounds and give a speaking engagement at 1pm.
The Dominguez Rancho Adobe Museum will feature costumed re-enactors who will represent the six Dominguez sisters, George Carson, Grigorio Del Amo, Dick Ferris, Louis Paulhan, Glenn Curtis and the general public from 1910. Museum tours will be given and for a small fee you can experience a 1910 box lunch. These are just some of the activities that will be made available to the public to commemorate this auspicious day.
